A heat recovery ventilation system performs three essential functions:

1. It extracts stale and polluted air from wet rooms, such as bathrooms and kitchens
2. It recovers heat from the extracted air to warm/cool incoming air from outside via a heat exchanger
3. It supplies the warm/cool filtered air to living areas

MVHR units are usually installed on an external wall and connected to a duct system.
