A third degree tear can cause pain, tenderness, swelling and difficulty passing stools in the short term. More serious complications can include wind incontinence, faecal incontinence, urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections and passing faeces through the vagina due to a recto-vaginal fistula.
