How long does the treatment take?

Lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) is minimally invasive. We perform it under local anaesthetic, where you stay awake during the operation. While low risk it is a very technical operation and is best performed by 2 fully trained and qualified surgeons. The surgery itself takes around 4 hours. Having the surgery under local anaesthetic  allows you to make a fast recovery, and go home the same day.

Vascularized lymphnode transfer (VLNT) is a more invasive surgery and takes approximately half a day and us under general anaesthetic. You will need to stay in hospital for 2 or 3 days after the surgery.

Liposuction for lymphoedema (SAPL) is more invasive than LVA, and requires a general anaesthetic where you are asleep for the procedure. Most patients stay in hospital for around three days afterwards.
