The IB Extended Essay course comprised two main components: a guide to researching and writing the IB extended essay, and independent research work.

Throughout the 14 classes, discussions on the students’ extended essay topics focused on their interests, significance, available data, knowledge and skills, and manageability. Other topics discussed in class were assessing the accuracy and reliability of sources, the ethics of research, analysing reading material, how to set up and manage an annotated bibliography, plagiarism, and referencing.

Moreover, a number of classes focused on the extended essay writing process, where the topics of academic English, outlining the essay, writing introductions, paragraphs, and conclusions were tackled. In addition, editing and proof-reading were addressed towards the end of the course, both in class and through individual feedback, as a number of students were writing their first drafts.

The students spent a significant amount of time working individually on their essays and making use of the University library resources. Teachers are also available to answer specific questions they might have with answers tailored to their specific cases.

Finally, planning for the rest of their extended essay writing period, time management, and physical and mental wellbeing while writing were addressed at the end of the course.
