Students had the opportunity to gain some insights into coming up with viable business ideas by working through the nine key components of the business model canvas, including customer segments, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, key partners, key resources, key activities, revenue and cost structure. The business model canvas is a useful tool for both start-up businesses and existing businesses as it provides insights into how an organisation creates, delivers and captures value. The class focused on not only giving students insights into the economic aspects of businesses but to also exploring how businesses can act as a force for good with societal and environmental impact. Hence each team tied their business idea to one of the 17 sustainable development goals put forward by the UN in 2015.

Aside from these, students learned transferrable skills such as professional presentation, team building, and leadership skills. These topics interested the class who were keen to gain some insights into the world of business including key skills that enable success in the global business environment. Running throughout all our sessions were fun quizzes and games using tools such as mentimeter and poll everywhere to stimulate creative thinking and to also check in on the extent to which students understood the lessons. These quizzes were useful to reassure students of what they actually understood and also to revisit any aspects of the lessons that students did not seem to understand so much.
